I do get a bit tired of the clever child/ silly adult storyline, I think this is patronising to children and misleading, they do need to listen to adults sometimes, especially in dangerous situations. Levi Pinfold plays with scale convincingly and creates atmospheric scenes that will pull your focus and grab you attention. By the way, can you find the toy octopus on each two-page spread showing the inside of the house (except the very last page)? In this Writing Root children will be reading the book Black Dog by Levi Pinfold and identifying the structure of the text.

I don't think those discussion points should reduce the overwhelming wonder this book is, but everyone has their own opinions and that is ok. The Django was painted in watercolours and gouache and his latest book, Black Dog, is painted in tempera – a mix of pigment with egg and water which has the same light touch as gouache but you can lay down dark underwashes with. I loved the figurines scattered throughout the house, especially the numerous little owls and the two shisa dogs posted outside the front door. Levi grew up on Roald Dahl and Morris Sendak, John Burningham, Pat Hutchins, and was obsessed with Clocks, Clocks and More Clocks.Levi has won a number of awards, including the BookTrust New Illustrator Award, the Kate Greenaway medal and the UKLA Picture Book Award. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. I think it has an important message for children and could be applied to lots of things that children could be scared of such as the dark, monsters under the bed, ghosts etc.

However much you love dogs small children do need to know that you can't just go up to a dog you don't know like that. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously. When a huge black dog appears outside the Hope family home, each member of the household sees it and hides.

We see in this book the black dog pursuing the child, willing to follow her through all manner of obstacles. With its frosty cover and thick pages, it could be a cherished favorite in anyone's home, to be experienced time after time. Panic and anxiety can be so easy to spread, especially when (as it was in the Hope family) the true circumstances have been distorted.Payments made using National Book Tokens are processed by National Book Tokens Ltd, and you can read their Terms and Conditions here. It's great for children to know that there are times when someone has to just stop the madness and see what all the fuss is about. The story gains memento through the repetition and the language, especially read aloud, it is captivating. The author wrote and illustrated this ingenious book portraying the ideal of fear from various perspectives.

Beautifully illustrated, a delight to roam around the details of each scene and a really nice story too - I don't want to give a lame summary but it was a very pleasing metaphor for how your fears can distort reality but how this can be overcome by facing them. A stray dog comes to a house and each family member who sees it thinks it's bigger and bigger, until they are barricading themselves behind the furniture, trying to make sure the apparently T-Rex size dog doesn't know they're home. As a child he absorbed himself in books and comics which were big influences on him as he grew up, as well as fine art as an adult. Being a silly story juxataposed against such beautifully atmospheric illustrations may be the point - but it felt like the author was going for some larger statement about facing fear. Told as a metaphor and using repetition and rhyme, it lends itself well to the study of literary language. I liked how there was usually the main illustration on the right-hand side of the page and then small frames around the text giving a bit more detail to the story.
